Assignment #6: Hate and the Internet.

  1. Hate speech, is a kind of offensive speech, is the thing would cause bad efforts for social stability in my mind. It disparages a racial, sexual, or ethnic group or a member of such a group. It will cause people hate the other sexs or racial and commit crimes.
  2. I would say yes on this question. I think the meaning of the government's exist is keeping social stability. While hate speech is harmful for social stability. Those limits are actually protect our benefits I think. Although those limits is good for us, the government can't have very strict limits. It would cause some conflicts between citizens and government.
  3. I don't think we need to reach an international consensus on how to define hate speech. Different countries or nations have different systems or histories, it means they have very different situations which make them have different hate speech need to face. So I think every country should make their own standards in dealing with it.
  4. Yes, take violence for example, when some key words about violence, the censorship or filtering systems can easy to point out and block the information. So censorship works sometimes, but people still can be provided hate speech by different ways.
  5. It is hard to judge whether the creators of hate-oriented resources need to be held responsible for actions of people who viewed their Web sites. Actually, they didn't force those people view their Web sites. Those people may went to their Web sites by a wrong click and they were just curious about these things. But I think those creators have to take responsibilities of those actions or crimes, because we can consider creators as abetters. They created Web sites are the reasons that people commit hate crimes.
  6. I would do that, because it can help children know hate-related material clearly. The responsibility of portecting children not only put them far away from hate-related material but also teach them how to deal with it.
  7. I think it sould have the distinciton. We can gain a lot of information including good things and hate speech from the Internet, but it not mean we will think hate speech is correct. It is the importance of having a distinction between what is legal online and what is legal offline. We need to judge the value of what we get.
  8. It shouldn't, because they are basiclly different. They are created by different purposes; they cause different efforts. Adults may have better ability of self control on pornography than children have. So the restriction of pornography is more strict for children. But for hate speech, everyone get the same standard.
