Assignment 6:Hate and the Internet

  1. I think the hate speech means that the opinions or speech which may have the arguments with other people.
  2. I agree with that we should place limits on free expression in order to deal with the problems posed by hate speech. I may define those limits like we may show our respects to other people or other opinions which we may not agree with. For example, the homosexual marriage. We can not have the hate speech with this kind of issue as it exists in our daily lives and we should show the respect to them.
  3. In my opinion, we should attempt to reach an international consensus on how to define hate speech; however, I do not agree with that we need to reach the international consensus on the standards. Because different countries have different cultures, so i think we do not need to reach the international consensus on standards.
  4. I think in some aspects, the censorship and the filtering of hate speech websites is appropriate. For instance, the censorship does not want people to know some evil theories.
  5. I think creators of hate-oriented Web sites should be held responsible for actions of people who view those sites and then commit hate crimes. If those people do not create the hate-oriented websites, other innocent people may not commit hate crimes. Because those people who create the hate-oriented give other people the wrong opinions.
  6. Yes, I would advocate special restrictions on making hate-related material available to children via the Internet. Everyone has their own ID, if the children want to enter the website which includes those hate-related materials, they should first fill the blanks with their private information and if they are under 18, they should be prevented from entering the website.
  7. No, I do not think that there should be any distinction between what is legal online and what is legal offline, because I think that the law protects us both online and offline.
  8. Yes, I think that the hate-related materials may lead to hate crime sometimes. However, those objectionable materials may not bring such serious results. But we still need to take actions to prevent children from accessing these objectionable materials like violence and pornography.
