“Assignment 6: Hate and the Internet.”
- Hate speech is the speech that disparaging a racial, sexual, or ethnic group or a member of such a group.
- I completely advocate to place limits on free expression. I think limits for the internet could make the environment of internet more “pure”.
There are all kinds of people make speeches on the Internet, they can say whatever they want behind the screen. Make the limits for the Internet
could reduce the negative effort to the society and keep Internet has a clean environment.
- I think different countries have different situations in their societies. They have different standards to define what is a hate speech or a good speech.
In a short period, I don’t think the whole world can reach an international consensus on how to define hate speech. For example, the speech about Tibet in China
will absolutely be defined as a hate speech. But in the USA, people can talk about it freely.
- I think the censorship and filtering of hate group websites are appropriate under the circumstances such as the websites about heresy, because they spread bad things
to people and make chaos in society. In China about 15 years ago, there was a heresy called “Falungong”. They inculcated some wired and scare things to their members
and made them burned themselves in front of the Tiananmen Square. That was a shocked news at that time.
- I think the creators should hold most responsible for those crimes, because their web sites caused a series of crimes. But I think people who did those crimes also have to hold responsible.
Because they did those bad things and nobody can change the truth, they are criminals too.
- I advocate that we should make special restrictions to children making the hate-related material. Because children are not mentally mature enough to face those complex problems.
We should avoid children to touch those materials.
- I think there should be some distinctions between legal online and legal offline. For example, some sensitive issues like the problem of Tibet is actually allowed to talk offline,
many people talk about it in their daily lives. But online, because everyone could see the speech that somebody made, it will cause more serious problem.
So government will prohibit those sensitive speeches.
- I think there should be some differences between the standards that apply to hate-related material and apply to pornography. The problems that hate-related material caused are more serious than pornography.
For pornography, we paid more attention to the problem that how pornography impacting teenagers. It’s just a social problem. But hate-related material will cause more critical problems such as murder and racial discrimination.
Government should treat hate-related material more carefully.
