Emily Chung- CS408 - Assignment #8

Question:

Which factor is or will be more important for protection of digital intellectual property: strict copyright laws (and strict enforcement) or technology-based protections (or neither)? Why?.

This question is basically asking me what is the better way to protect our intellectual property.

Discussion

Summarize of my team's discussion:

Emily : strict copyright laws will be more important for protection of digital intellectual property. Because people will afraid of breaking the law and going to jail, which sounds more scary to people. They usually intend to avoid doing that. So people will not try to get into other's property.

Jiaxi: technology-based protect will be more important for protection of digital intellectual property. Most people didn't intend to break the law. If law is too strict, a lot of people will be already broken the law and technology changes all the time, so people will not be so easily to get into the property.

My own personal feelings:

I think strict copyright laws will be more important for protection of digital intellectual property.Laws sound already important to people, people natural reaction is not wanting to committed crime and people wants to follow the law. Therefore, if the law is set up, it's relatively easy to protection the digital intellectual property About or technology-based protections , people nowadays know technology, everything is technology in life, it's so easy for people to find out how to break all the barrier or password in order to get the digital intellectual property. It's way harder to protech people's digital intellectual property. Even some people think that technology-based protections can change all the time so people won't find the way to break it, I think it's still easy since a lot of technology people now. Therefore I think strict copyright laws will be more important for protection of digital intellectual property.
