Emily Chung- CS408 - Assignment #7

Question:

Suppose you are writing an antispam law. What do you think is a reasonable defination of spam in this context? Indicate the number of messages and how the law would determine whether a message was solicited.

This question is basically asking me to define spam through writing an antispam law. Also to think how many spam messages do I think people can send out. Lastly, to determined whether a message is given or supplied without being requested or asked for.

Discussion

Summarize of my team's discussion:

We think that spam is flooding the Internet with many copies of the same message, they are trying to force people to receive the messages that people usually try not to receive. For example, spam is usually commercial advertising, often for dubious products, get-rich-quick schemes, or quasi-legal services. We think it is hard to just restrict all the spam messages that sent by sender and it doesn't really make sense to write a law that people shouldn't send out spam messages. After discussing, we all think that sender can send out 10 spams all in total. So, how would the law determine whether a message was unsolicited? We think as long as something is not going to really happen, like lottery or prize, which they are always not going to happen. They should be considered as unsolicited. Also, if people didn't subscribe it in advance, commercial or advertisement shouldn't be sent out. Spam is flooding the Internet with many copies of the same message, in an attempt to force the message on people who would not otherwise choose to receive it. Most spam is commercial advertising, often for dubious products, get-rich-quick schemes, or quasi-legal services. Spam costs the sender very little to send -- most of the costs are paid for by the recipient or the carriers rather than by the sender.

My own personal feelings:

I think spam is those emails that always appear in my junk email box, which I found it very annoying and want to just delete it without clicking in it and check. I definitely think that government should set up some law to protect the citizen since they sometime cost citizen's money and they would be very harmful for our computer once we downloaded it. Also, as I know, there are a lot of my friends that find all the spam is very annoying and useless. Therefore I think that the government should just write a law to ban that al. Lastly, I think that as long as the messages that people don't want to get and find it useless, this is considered as unsolicited.
