HistoryDurham House of Pets was founded in 1972 by Ken Peters. Ken came from a Native American tribe located in the Northwestern part of the United States. He always had a passion for taking care of his tribe's animals. The day he turned 18 years old he hitch hiked across the country to the small town of Durham, NH to find paying work. Ken worked 80 hours a week for 5 years in order to save up enough money to start the pet store. The first products sold were various animals Ken actually caught himself while using his Native American hunting skills. Ken's amazing story spread like wildfire and the store took off. After the first year Ken was able to sell common household pets, along with common supplies such as food, leashes, cages, etc. Since the first store was opened, 14 more have been opened in locations all across New England. Corporate headquarters are located in Durham, NH and there are regional offices in Maine, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. Ken retired in 2008 and gave the business to his son Tim.
