Assignment 6: Hate and the Internet

Questions

  1. How would you define “hate speech?”
  2. Would you advocate placing limits on free expression (as most European countries do) in order to deal with the problems posed by hate speech? If so, how would you define those limits?
  3. Should we attempt to reach an international consensus on how to define hate speech and on the standards (if any) to be applied in dealing with it?
  4. Is censorship or filtering of hate group websites ever appropriate? If so, under what circumstances?
  5. Should creators of hate-oriented Web sites be held responsible for actions of people (such as the ‘lone wolves,’ people who commit crimes of hatred without specific instructions) who view those sites and then commit hate crimes?
  6. Would you advocate special restrictions on making hate-related material available to children via the Internet? (If so, what would you propose?)
  7. Should there be any distinction between what is legal online and what is legal offline?
  8. Should the standards that apply to hate-related material be different from the standards that apply to other objectionable material such as pornography?

My Opinion

  1. In my opinion about hate speech, it is just racism. All of the human has equal rights of life, liberty, persuit of happiness regarldless of color, race, ethnicity, gender. However in the internet because of freedom of speech people write whatever they want, eventhough they have no right to say.
  2. I think sometimes we need limitation, when people say really seriosly without reason. If their speech has appropriate reason, it can be published. However their speech, just discrimination or saying whatever they want it needs some reaction.
  3. These days, all over the world we can communicate all over the world with internet, that's why we called our generation is global world. Therefore we need international concensus. Such as when people criticize other country, we need proper reason about your saying. You can't say anything without evidence. That is just nonsense.
  4. I think we need censorship or filtering of hate group wevsites, because their speech can be problem serious propblem. Also it can hurts other people's mind. We need censorship under the agreement of society.
  5. I think they have to charge of thier work. Probably people whose think their speech is really dishonor to them, they can sue creators of hate speech website with defamation. If he can take it, then he can do it. Anyway he have to take responsibilty with his work.
  6. I really don't want these site, but i dont want to restrict on making hate realted marteial. The reason is children have also distingish about right or wrong. Also if children grow up and go to society, they can see worse than those things. Therefore i think it will be ok to exist hated realted internet site.
  7. I think pronography. In the off-line under 21 they really hard to find those things. But online if children search few time about pornography they can find it easily.
  8. I think it should be treated with different way. Because hate realted material is the opinion of people's thinking, but pornography isn't. So if should be treated differently.
