What we did:
Our first stop on our trip was Shanghai. Shanghai is located in eastern
China at the mouth of the Yangtze River. It is the most populated city in
China. We arrived in Shanghai at night, so we were able to go to sleep and
try to overcome our jetlag.
The next morning we got up and went into the city. Here we saw the worlds
second tallest building, the radio tower (also known as the Pearl), and
many other famous buildings.
We visited the Shanhai Museum which is a collection of ancient Chinese
art. It has over 120,000 pieces to view. There are eleven permanent
galleries and three temporary exhibition halls.
The permanent galleries are:
- Ancient Chinese Bronze
- Ancient Chinese Sculpture
- Ancient Chinese Ceramics
- Ancient Chinese Jades
- Ancient Chinese Paintings
- Ancient Chinese Calligraphy
- Ancient Chinese Seals
- Ancient Chinese Numismatics
- Chinese Furniture in Ming Dynasty
- Chinese Furniture in Qing Dynasty
- Arts and Crafts by Chinese Minorities
Blow are a few pictures of artifacts that we saw in the Shanghai museum.

To get to our next destination, Xian, we had to take an overnight train. This was the first of two overnight trains that we took. Each room on the train had four beds. The rooms were small, but they werent as bad as I expected. We were on the train to Xian for about 12 hours. There was a food cart that served breakfast in the morning a steamed bun, spicy chilled noodles, steamed rice, and a hard boiled egg. Breakfast foods, as we know them, are not eaten in China. A typical breakfast in China consists of rice or noodles, a steamed bun, and a soup. Although tea is one of the most popular drinks in China, people usually do not drink it with breakfast. Below are three pictures of the train.
