Baseball Pitching and Basic Fundamentals

Pitching

In baseball, a pitch is the act of throwing a baseball toward home plate. Wikipedia. The objective is to get the baseball within a virtual zone and get a strike, know as the strike zone The strike zone is an imaginary box that is used by the umpire to call a strike or a ball. If the pitch is not within this zone it's called a ball. The top of the strike zone is a horizontal line at the midpoint between the top of the batter's shoulders and the top of the uniform pants. The bottom of the strike zone is a line at the hollow beneath the kneecap. The right and left boundaries of the strike zone correspond to the edges of home plate. A pitch that touches the outer boundary of the zone is as much a strike as a pitch that is thrown right down the center. On both sides of home plate are what's called batter's boxes. Depending on which hand the batter is they will stand within the perspective batter's box attempting to swing at the pitch. Using a variety of pitches the pitcher will attempt to strike the batter out. This can be achieved by getting three called strikes by the umpire before the batter aquires four balls. The batter can swing or not swing at any pitch, but if the ball hits the strike zone it will be counted as a said strike otherwise it's a ball.

Pitching Strategy

When pitching in baseball you are essentially on the defensive side of the ball. Pitchers commonly use a arsenal of pitchers. By using a variety of different grips, velocity, trajectory, movement, hand position, wrist position, release, and arm angle they confuse the batter. In MLB you will find some of the best pitchers in the world. Getting the batter out is the main objective by means of striking out or throwing the ball in such a way that the batter doesn't make good contact. If the batter does make contact he will hopefully put the ball in play for the defense to make the out. If however the batter gets a hit with runners on base and those runners make it home he earns what's called a RBI usually pronounced “RIBBIE”

Pitching Mechanics

Baseball pitching mechanics have no real standard. Not every pitcher throws in the same manner or has the same windup. The key is to have a the same delivery and repeatable motion each time and Velocity: X=x0+v0t+1/2 at2 Pitching velocity is the result of how explosively the lower body moves from the back leg to the front leg while stretching out like a huge rubber band into a long stride while getting the upper body and arm in the right position to throw. Pitching is not about arm strength but about arm speed. So if you want to improve improve your velocity you do it by speeding up your body. Velocity is the direct result of all the forces of the body added together to help speed up the arm.
