Ross Batchelder CS408-01 Assignment 7

Group 5: Topic A "Free Software"

I do not think that the free software approach should be adopted because I believe the quality of software would not be as good. It would be more difficult to give people and companies the incentive to make high quality software if they can’t make as much money as they do making software that must be purchased. The quantity of software available I believe would grow tremendously but I do not believe that the right amount of time and money would be spent in order to make good free software. I do not believe the current funding fo free software would be sufficient because many more people and companies would need more money to make their software free to the public. If software were to become free to the general public software licenses would have to be universal and more than likely changed so that the public had a common median that they could use in order to download the new software. If they were able to make free software for downloading music they would have to figure out a way to compensate the artists for their work which would probably require much more advertising within some of the software down loads which would cause an inconvenience for the subscriber. I believe that people justify copying simply because almost everything else in the world around us is a copy these days. Car companies base their designs on whatever company is most successful and even though cars may look different at first glance their similarities from company to company are even more evident. Music that is produced today typically uses beats from older music and sometimes are just older soundtracks that are spead up or slowed down or slightly altered to be used in a new track. Just like software everything that is made these days are based off of things from the past, which is basically what copying is. I believe that software should be copyrightable to a certain extent. I believe that people should be able to attain a copy right to make money for what they’ve come up with but I also understand that people will review old software to come up with ideas for new software.
