Group 8 | Anonymity on the Internet

As a group, we thought that the potential for harm by criminals does not outweigh the loss of privacy and restraint on freedom of speech for honest people who use anonymity responsibly. We thought that since there is a limit to what a criminal can physically do through the internet, that it doesn't outweigh the loss of privacy on freedom of speech for people who use it honestly. Anonymity is definitely an important protection against possible abuse of government power because if the government were to intervene on a blog or some sort of website, the people using anonymizers will be protected.

We believed that people should be allowed to use tools, such as anonymizers, to protect their privacy. Our thinking was that no matter what, people will abuse anything and everything, and whats more important is to protect the innocent people. Just as it is legal to send hardcopy mail without a return address, we should be allowed to post on blogs anonymously or send emails without a return address. There should not be more restrictions on anonymity on the internet. Even if there were to be restrictions on anonymity, its nothing a hacker can't get around, which is exactly why we think that there shouldn't be restrictions on anonymity.

In my opinion, I feel strongly that we are guaranteed our rights to freedom of speech, and it should be acceptable to decide if we choose to be anonymous or not. Although criminals can then hide themselves as anonymous, I don't doubt that there is a technology used by the FBI or CIA that can breach the anonymity of a person on the internet, therefore catching the criminal.
