Big Nates was founded by Nathaniel Hosking in 1910, in Chatham Massachusetts. Nathaniel was a passionate fisherman who specialized in making his own flies. He met a young entrepreneur by the name of Flip who was fascinated by Nathaniel’s ability to make flies and suggested that they work together to sell them. Nathaniel began by selling his products out of his garage, and his new friend helped him advertise and bring in customers. They found a surprising amount of success, and Flip designed a website for online shopping. The business continued to grow, as Nathaniel started making lures and ordering more fishing supplies in bulk. The two men relocated their business to a small warehouse in 1965, and the company has been there ever since.
