Analyzer Simulations

These plots show particle trace simulation results for several different analyzer geometries. The first plot shows the energy and angle acceptance. The red traces show the effect of adding a 0.100in wide entrance slit collimator at the center of the detector acceptance. The skew is the mean acceptance angle. Ideally it should be zero. Negative numbers indicate the look direction skews upwards toward the top cap.

The second plot shows the exit focusing. The particle location when crossing a screen at 0.070in below the analyzer is used for these plots.

The middle panel shows the radius distribution at the exit screen. The MCP active area extends to 0.800. The resistive strip runs from 0.610 to 0.780. The BEEPS magnet section nominal entry point is at 0.750

The bottom panel shows a histogram of the distance from the analyzer where the particle trace passes through zero in Z. This gives an indication of where the focus point is. The red line shows the position of the exit screen.

TOPAZ3 HEEPS-LO

Truncated sphere.
R1= 0.682 inch
R2= 0.730 inch
R3= 0.778 inch
entrance= 16 deg
sigma= 8.3 deg

theoretical energy factor 7.3
theoretical geometry factor 1e-4

Focus point is above the exit screen.

HE0 analyzer. Standard electron HEEPS

Focus is well below exit screen (as it should be for a high energy analyzer).

B5 analyzer. 0.050 gap. Stretched hemisphere
r1:0.650
r2:0.700
entrance = 17 deg
gap=.134
stretch=.073

B6 analyzer. 0.050 gap. Larger r. Less stretch.
r1:0.680
r2:0.730
entrance = 15 deg
gap=.110
stretch=.045

B7 analyzer. Very large r. Extension beyond 90 deg.
r1:0.950
r2:1.000
entrance = 14 deg
gap=.130
stretch=.073

Focus point is too far above the exit screen.

B8 analyzer. Smaller extension.
r1:0.710
r2:0.760
entrance = 16 deg
gap=.130
stretch=.073

Focus point is above the exit screen but may be usable.

B10 analyzer. No extension. Larger r, smaller stretch than B6. Inner entrance angle smaller than outer to improve skew.
r1:0.700
r2:0.750
entrance = 11 deg, 16 deg
gap=.110
stretch=.024
