“several civilians” killed

on Thursday, December 6, 2007

in the Khost and Jija areas of Khak-i-Safid district of Farah Province. Following a fire exchange between Afghan Army (ANA) troops seeking to search a village and resistance fighters, close air support bombed the area. Conflicting reports of the fight exist with some saying Taliban were killed and others reporting civilians killed. The Khak-i-Safid district had been briefly taken over by the Taliban in early November; some 400 Taliban attacked the Bakwa and Gulistan districts. Forc a month fierce fighting has raged in this area of Farah Province. The use of close air support to bomb village areas most likely did result in “several civilians” dying (as reported by a Taliban spokesman).
