Behnooshahr, a girl, 12
Her mother wounded
A male driver wounded
in
the morning of May 3, 2009
on the road linking
the Herat airport to the Gazara district, Herat province. A civilian car
carrying three people from Farah who were going to a wedding party, was fired
upon by international occupation forces. The car was hit by gun fire from two
Italian armored personnel carriers. The 12-yr-old girl was shot in the face by
an Italian soldier said her uncle, Ahmad Wali. Mr. Wali who was also wounded by
shattering glass recounted, “after the convoy had passed by, we realized that
half of my niece’s face was missing, her mother was wounded in the chest and I
had blood on my face caused by broken pieces of the windshield.” Reuters TV
footage showed a white Toyota car with its rear and side windows destroyed and
its frame punctured with bullet holes. Barakatollah Mohammadi, a doctor who
treated the family at a hospital in Herat was shocked at the extent of
Behnooshahr’s wounds:
“Her
head was almost severed from her neck.”
