A critically injured man and woman

killed at about 10 P.M. on Friday, August 14, 2004

at a newly established checkpoint near Ghazni on the main road linking Kandahar and Kabul. Soldiers from the Afghan National Army and from the 3^rd Battalion, 116^th U.S. Infantry (based at the forward operating base in Ghazni) killed two women and one man in a pickup truck which is alleged to have tried to run through the checkpoint. Another man and woman were critically injured. The five family members were returning to Ghazni from a visit to a village. The driver of the van, who survived, said he neither saw signs telling him to stop nor heard any warning shot. On Monday, a U.S. military spokesman “apologized” for the deaths
