Two women One man A critically injured man and woman
killed at about 10 P.M. on Friday, August 14, 2004
at a newly established checkpoint near Ghazni on the main road linking Kandahar and Kabul. Soldiers from the Afghan National Army and from the 3rd Battalion, 116th U.S. Infantry (based at the forward operating base in Ghazni) killed two women and one man in a pickup truck which is alleged to have tried to run through the checkpoint. Another man and woman were critically injured. The five family members were returning to Ghazni from a visit to a village. The driver of the van, who survived, said he neither saw signs telling him to stop nor heard any warning shot. On Monday, a U.S. military spokesman “apologized” for the deaths
