in the village of Qala-e-Shater (Ghaleh Shafer) at the edge of Herat. The village had been heavily cluster bombed on October 22nd , killing 12 people then mostly from the same extended family. Others were severely injured including Muhammad Ayoub, 20, who lost his leg and his eyes and had his face disfigured. Two cousins, aged 7 and 9, were injured on Tuesday, November 20th, when they picked up an unexploded U.S. cluster bomblet while playing. As Amy Waldman (New York Times) reported, “most children in Afghanistan, lacking toys, play with what they find. In this tiny, dusty village, they have been finding pieces of a cluster bomb.”
