In Sympathy for

Mohammed Salam, 8

injured in Kabul, October 2001

Mohammed Salam, 8, was asleep when the U.S. bomb fell. Shrapnel sliced his leg. He is in a hospital bed waiting to find out whether he will have to have another foot amputated on October 29, 2001. Operations at the hospital were severely impaired because of the U.S. bombing - supplies dwindled, staff feared going to work, electricity was intermittent (AP photo, Dimitri Messinis).
