Azza Ahmed Nuwair (Nowair), wife of Ayman al-Zawahiri
killed about December 3, 2001
near the mountains of Tora Bora in Nangarhar Province. The long-time wife of Ayman al-Zawahiri and two of her four children were killed by a U.S. bomb which fell on a school house where many al-Qaeda family members were hiding, seeking shelter from the intense U.S. bombing. Azza Ahmed Nuwair, an Egyptian college graduate in philosophy, and Ayman were married in 1978. Their son and one of three daughters also perished in the bombing attack. Tom Downey (of The Guardian) reported (4/23/06) on a Yemeni who helped bury Azza.
