Assignment 6: Hate and the Internet.

  1. Personally, if the target gets hurt because of that speech, it would be defined as hate speech.
  2. I would not advocate placing limits just because of hate speech. I will depend on the places. If it is a public place like transportation and public community, I would not place limit. However, if it is a serious place like government offices, I would encourage placing limits on hate speech.
  3. I don't think we need to. It is because every country has different culture. Therefore, there are different definitions over the hate speech. I think it is hard and impossible to set up an international consensus.
  4. I think it is only appropriate at school and some public institutions. It contradicts to the freedom of speech. It is about choice. When the children do not have the ability to make appropriate choice. Filtering and censorship are needed to help them reduce the risk of hate speech. In generally, I dont agree with it.
  5. Of course, morally, they are wrong to put out the hate speech. However, as mentioned, surfing a website is about choice. If you do not choose to look at it, there is no way to hurt you. Therefore, I think the one who chose to look at it should bear the greatest responsibility.
  6. I would not advocate the restrictions to the children. I think the parents should be responsible with this. I think personal filtering is enough if the parents really want to restrict some hate-materials. Large scale of legal restriction is not needed because it is also important for the children knowing the black and white.
  7. I think Internet is part of the freedom of speech. I think there should not be distinction between what is legal online or offline. However, some restriction over confidential is still needed.
  8. To me, they are different things. Hated-material is just the writer's point of view upon something. However, objectionable material is something the society cannot accept in common. Therefore, they should not have the same standard.
