Stiff - The Funnier Side of Cadaver Research
Today's book recommendation is not for a book that I'd like to sell. Well, I'd like to sell it if I had multiple copies of course, but this is a book I just bought myself. If you have not yet discovered Mary Roach, do yourself a favor and buy this book! This title is both a wonderfully funny and still respectful exploration of the science of cadaver research. Sounds interesting, right? It is, trust me, it is. The often quoted opening line tells it all: "The way I see it, being dead is not terribly far off from being on a cruise ship. Most of your time is spent lying on your back."
Baseball Firsts - Manny, A-Rod & Barry Bonds
I am a huge baseball fan. Well, to be specific, I am a huge Boston Red Sox fan. So it seems only fitting that the first book I talk about in my new blog is about baseball. This one is a paperback published in April 2007. Josh Lewin also wrote "Getting in the Game" and was a Fox baseball commentator.
He interviewed more than 100 players about their debuts in the big leagues for this fascinating book. Among the notable players are A-Rod, Barry Bonds and Manny Ramirez. Anybody who is following the recent news about these three and steroid use will want to read this book! (As a Red Sox fan let me just say that we are more grateful for Jason Bay every day!)
This isn't the type of book you would want to sit down and read through but it's a great book to pick up when you just have a few minutes, or when you get curious about your favorite players. It is a welcome diversion from the current bad news about steroids, suspensions, tell-all books, and court cases.
Iron Chef - Every Single Detail!
This is THE book for fans of the popular reality food show on the Food Network. You get a great behind-the-scene view of the show. And even better, the book is full of recipes from the show. Printed on glossy paper the pictures make your mouth water.
Fuji Television, the author of the book, says: All chefs are equal in the eyes of an ingredient.
This challenge is the premise of the show.
The book includes "plate-by plate" commentary of every show for the real die-hard fans, and I know there are lots of them. I am not enough of an Iron Chef purist to love the shows that don't feature Alton Brown, but this is a great read for those who are.
Prom Night
"The sexiest moments, the wildest parties, the most unexpected, unforgettable surprises - it all happens on prom night." Not an endorsement a parent might want to see on the back cover of a young adult novel, but EXACTLY what you'd want to see if you are a teenage girl. Here we are smack in the middle of prom season and this is THE book for prom-aged girls. Makes me want to go back in time.
It's prom season once again, which translates to expensive dresses, finding the perfect date, and having the best time
of your life. The prom is the perfect excuse for anyone to look their best, even though it may result in a little
overspending. For Lisa Marie, Heather, and Marianna, it is all they can think about. It's the event of the school year and they want
to make the best of it.
Rover, Don't Roll Over
If you knew me, you'd know that I am crazy in love with my dog. Seriously, my dog is a rescue dog and it was mutual! This book is an unusual dog training book, written by a professional dog trainer and behavioral therapist. It's different from other training manuals in that the focus is on honoring both the dog and the owner. If you are troubled by the trainers who insist you can never feed your dog "people" food or let your dog sleep on your bed, this might be the book for you.
Through the Rose Window
Fourteen essays explore the many roles of art and religion as vehicles for transcendent truth. The art in question is the rose stained glass window in Chicago's First Unitarian Church. Steven Schroeder says, in Booklist: The whole book's spirit is distilled in a story from the end of a 1978 Easter sermon Hayward preached in Carbondale, Illinois. He recalls when one of his sons came home from school and announced "to his Unitarian mother" that "Jesus is the Son of God," to which she replied, "So are you, honey." Mother and son "were satisfied and at peace with this good news," Hayward says. Readers of this engaging celebration of a life devoted to liberal Christianity may share those feelings.
This is just a small sampling of the titles in my inventory. I specialize in select subject areas and offer titles in many other subjects.
