About the Course

Course Description

Introductory course covering basic topics relating to the Internet. Subjects discussed include e-mail, newsgroups, mailing lists, file transfer, telnet, the World Wide Web, Web browsers, search engines, and hypertext markup language (HTML). A large portion of the course focuses on Web publishing. Security and privacy issues, and commerce and legal issues are also discussed. Students are expected to have no previous experience with HTML. They will acquire new skills as well as broad understanding of the technical possibilities of living and working in an online society and its implications.

Objectives

There are several sections of CS403, taught by a variety of instructors. Although all these instructors follow the general direction set by the course description above, each instructor designs a course that reflects his/her own objectives.

Students successfully completing my sections of CS403 should be able to:

• Describe the technologies that form the basis of the Internet and, in particular, the World Wide Web


• Understand the impact of the Internet on society, especially the ways it has changed social interaction
• Effectively use search engines
• Use and manage email
• Understand the importance of privacy and security
• Create and publish their own content on the World Wide Web by:
  • following good web design
  • using XHTML and CSS properly
  • modifying and effectively including images
  • creating and using forms
