Environment and Social Change in Native Communities of Arctic AlaskaVillage of Noorvik

Research on rapid social change and the impacts of oil and mining development in bush Alaska. Baseline surveys (1992, 1995) examined the aspirations and expectations of high school students in 19 rural schools. Follow-up surveys (1993, 1999) provide opportunities to compare baseline responses with the actual outcomes experienced after high school. Demographic analyses connect the survey results with larger population trends in Alaska and other Arctic regions. This research has been supported by grants from the Arctic Social Sciences program of the U. S. National Science Foundation, 1991-99.
