It is pretty clear that the Celtics are the best team historically with 17 championships. Even though the Patriots and the Red Sox have had more titles in recent years, the collection of tropies undoubtedly belongs to the Celtics. The Celtics from the 60's to the 80's were an unstoppable force along with the west coast rival Lakers. We should consider ourselves lucky, we are currently living in a time when all four of the major teams are contenders for titles. No other cities can say that, making Boston the best sports town in the nation.
It's pretty difficult to have four great teams when leagues have salary caps. The MLB is the only league of the four that doesn't have a salary cap, which is why the Yankees have the most talented team in the league every year. This of course, makes it even more satisfying when they lose. The Red Sox are known to be quite big spenders as well, but no where near as high as the Yankees. Here is a table of the top spenders in the MLB in 2010:
| New York Yankees | Boston Red Sox | Chicago Cubs | Philadelphia Phillies | New York Mets | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Payroll | $206,333,389 | $162,747,333 | $146,859,000 | $141,927,381 | $132,701,445 |
| Salary Per Player | $8,253,336 | $5,611,977 | $5,439,222 | $5,168,835 | $5,103,902 |
| Place in Division | 2nd | 3rd | 5th | 1st | 4th |
