Assignment 4: Hate and the Internet
- I would define “hate speech” as speech used with the intent to cause emotional pain
- I would not advocate placing limits on freedom of speech because I think it would cause more harm than the current policy does.
- I do not think we should attempt to reach an international consensus because each culture has a different definition of what hate speech is and it would be impossible to reach an agreement.
- Filtering of hate group websites is appropriate because in some cases hate group websites may contain information surrounding illegal or dangerous activities.
- I do not think hate-oriented websites should be held responsible because if there are no specific instructions to commit a crime then they should not be held accountable.
- I would advocate for restrictions on these types of websites being available to children. I would propose that any websites containing content that is not allowed on television should require a special log in.
- There should be a significant distinction between what is legal on and offline because on line someone can threaten, act violently or post vulgar things. Suggesting otherwise would create an even more dangerous society than we already live in.
- I do not think the standards should be different because that would violate the rights people have to freedom of speech.
