Assignment 4: Hate and the Internet.
- Hate speech is an act of prejudice against a group
or individuals based on race, religion, gender,
or sexual orientation.
- I wouldn't set limits on free speech. Our nation is very
proud of the constitution written by our founding fathers. I think
that the First Amendment is very clear in all matters of speech
and protest. As long as nobody is being personally attacked, groups
making their opinions known are entirely within the law.
- I think striving to create an international definition
is extremely unnecessary. Seeing as most hate speech is expressed by
Americans at foreign cultures, I think more problems than solutions
would come as a result.
- The only reason the government should ever step in on hate
group websites is to ensure that young children can't visit the site
and won't be exposed to information that might trouble their young
minds. Or if violent/graphic images are displayed on the site, there
should be a content warning.
- In my opinion, the one who commits the crime should be held
responsible.
- I believe that hate related information should be viewable
to young children, but certain conctent may be too mature for them.
If there are content warnings on any sites that may be desturbing to
children, they won't stumble into anything too innapropriate for their
age.
- I think legal is legal, whether that means it is online or
out in the real world. Who says the internet isn't part of the real
world too?
- I believe that anything that may be viewed as innapropriate for
children, such as pornography and violent images should have a content warning.
