Dr. Joe L.P. Lugalla got his B.A. and M.A. in Sociology from the Univ. of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. He recieved his Ph.D. in Social Sciences from Bremen Univ., Germany. He also holds a Certificate in Health and Behaviour Research from the Dept. of Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Cambridge, MA, USA. He has researched extensively and has been a consultant on several occasions in the areas of poverty, development and health, especially in issues relating to HIV/AIDS and the health of women and street children. At present, he is a co-researcher in the "Kagera AIDS Research Project," one of the researchers in a Multi-Country study, "Violence Against Women and its Implication on Women's Health," and is Tanzania's Principal Investigator in an "International Dating Relationships Study." He has also conducted surveys on "Urban Life and Street Children's Health in Urban Tanzania." Dr. Lugalla has consulted for USAID, the Population Council of Washington in USA, UNICEF, ILO and the government of Tanzania. At present, he is a Professor in the Dept. of Anthropology at the Univ. of New Hampshire in the United States. Previously he held the position of Head of the Department of Sociology at the Univ. of Dar-es-Salaam and has also taught and researched in Austria and Germany. He also currently manages Health and Development International consulting firm in Tanzania.
