Assignment 6: Hate and the Internet

1. I think if the speech is to insult and attact people or things, it should be regarded as a hate speech.
2. I would agree to place limits on free expression in the public, such as speech and Internet, because it really does harm to people sometimes. I think if the expression includes insulting words, points to a specific person or thing, and does harm to the person or the thing, or mislead the public, the expression should be forbidded.
3. I think we can hardly reach an international consensus on defining and dealing with hate speech, because different countries are in different conditions. Each country has its own culture, religons and history. These things will affect people's judgment and perspective. So people in different countries might reach different agreement on hate speech. Moreover, the media is a tool which is utilized by the government to help them control the country. Different government will have different political aims and attitudes, so they will have different standards to regulate the media, especially on hate speech.
4. In China, I think the censorship of hate group websites is not appropriate. The government is trying to hide truth from the public, especially the sensitive political events. Most people merely know what the government what them to know. The government control the media. So the government might use regulating hate group websites as an excuse to hide the truth which they don't want people to know.
5. Yes, they should be responsible for the hate crimes. The creators of hate-oriented websites lead people's thoughts. These websites are the potential or direct reason for people to commit hate crimes. So the creators should take the responsibility.
6. I think hate-related materials have tiny impacts on children, because they won't really care about the materials. Also, I think those materials will help children to get a better perspective. They can learn things in different aspects. So there is no need to restrict children from hate-related materials.
7. Yes. Vitual world is different from reality. For instance, killing people in reality is illegal, but it is legal in online games.
8. Yes. Children should not be restrited form hate-related materials, but they should be restricted frompornaography.
