Lagado is located on the island continent of Balnibarbi. It is the major city; about half the size of London in the early 1700s. The Grand Academy of Lagado, founded in the mid 1600s is located in the city. One early visitor to the Academy described its function as follows:

"In these colleges the professors contrive new rules and methods of agriculture and building, and new instruments and tools for all trades and manufactures, .....The only inconvenience is, that none of these projects are yet brought to perfection... (Lemuel Gulliver, 1727)"

The Lagado Regional Primate Centre (LRPC) is the most recent addition to this old Academy. The LRPC is devoted--inter alia-- to behavioral alchemy--the science of transmuting base species into noble ones, thereby forever removing the last Rubicon between man and beast.
