Assignment 5: Hate and the Internet

  1. Hate speech is speech that attacks a person or a group of people based on race, religion, sexuality, or gender.
  2. I wouldn't place limits on free expression other than the limits we have now. Freedom of speech is a right that we all have and it's not something that anyone should control. In certain environments I think it should be limited, especially where there are children involved but other than that, I don't agree with it.
  3. I think that each country should have their own standards and definition when dealing with hate speech. Each country and every culture is different, I don't think that coming up with one international consensus would be very beneficial.
  4. I think that filtering hate group websites is appropriate in cases where children have access of them.
  5. The creators of the websites should not be responsible for the actions of those people, it is their own choice to carry out hate crimes, the website did not make them do that.
  6. I don't think that they should be exposed to it unless they are in a school related setting. I think that it is important that they know that such hateful things go on in the world but I think that they should see it in a controlled environment and for educational purposes only.
  7. I think that there shouldn't be a distinction in what is legal online and offline, they should have the same standards.
  8. The standards that apply to hate-related material and other objectionable material should have different standards. Depending on the circumstances, one situation may be more harmful than another, resulting in harsher punsihment.
