- The 12/5-11, 1998 TV Guide featured 4 different covers: Steve Austin, Undertaker, Hogan, and Goldberg.
- The Blue Meanie joined the JOB Squad on the 11/29/98 Heat.
- Hollywood Hulk Hogan announced his retirment on the Tonight Show on 11/26/98 and announced that he will run for President in the year 2000. (no comment)
- Stone Cold Steve Austin was featured in the 11/23/98 issue of Newsweek.
- There was an article about Jesse Ventura in the 11/16/98 Newsweek magazine.
- HHH had knee surgery recently in Birmingham, AL. by Dr. James
Andrews (Autumn 1998).
- Chyna had reconstructive surgery on her jaw (Autumn 1998).
- Raven, Disco Inferno and Chris Jericho appeared on an episode of The Dating Game (Autumn 1998).
- I can't believe I watched NBC's "Secrets of Pro Wrestling Exposed" on 11/1/98 instead of Heat. Tell us something we don't already know. The show made the fans look like fools. What a waste of time. Plus, as if we couldn't tell who at least 3 of those wrestlers were.
- MTV's Celebrity Death match featured Steve Austin vs. Vince McMahon on Thursday, October 29, 1998.
- The Roaddog sang with Motley Crue on the October 26, 1998 RAW episode, and the October 25th Heat.
- NWA 50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION (October 23rd to 25th, 1998 in
Philadelphia, PA. ):
NWA President, Howard Brody, announced that the
50th Anniversary of the modern NWA would be celebrated
with a special fan weekend in Philadelphia (fan convention, show with wrestlers from NWA affiliated promotions, and a banquet for the inductions of the first members of the NWA Hall of Fame).
While I'm not sure what was actually done in Philadelphia, on October 24, 1998 in Cherry Hill, New Jersey held the fourth annual Northeast banquet for the Cauliflower Alley Club (CAC). Honorees included: Harley Race, Dory Funk, Jr., Lou Thesz, Danny Hodge, Gordon Sollie, Fred Blassie, Dan Severn, "The Terrible Tuton" Karl Von Hess, Tully Blanchard, and Abdullah the Butcher. Guests included: Killer Kowalski, Tom Drake, Billy Darnell, Ida Mae Martinez, The Boston Bad Boy Tony Rumble, Johnny Diamond, Tony DeVito, Dr. Tom Prichard, Jim Cornette, Shawn Stasiak, Tiger Ali Singh, Kurt Angle, Steve "Dr. Death" Williams, and Jim Ross.
The next CAC event will be April 23 and 24 in Newton, Iowa.
- Sable was on the 10/11/98 edition of Pacific Blue.
- From a fan: "I went to the Oklahoma City (9/20/98) show and it was Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Mankind vs. Kane vs. Undertaker. Well needless to say Austin kicked the c*** out of all of them. It also featured an arm wrestling match with Sable and Jacqueline. Sable won. The New Age Outlaws faced Too Much. Outlaws win. There wasn't much more to it than that. Look for the Nation to split pretty soon. DX will be stronger than ever pretty soon."
- The WWF's "Wrestle Vessel III" took place on the brand new Disney Magic cruise ship. The dates were September 7-11, 1998 and WWF Superstars scheduled to be onboard were Shawn Michaels, X-Pac, HHH, Chyna, Sable, the Headbangers, New Age Outlaws, Ken Shamrock, Mankind, Dude Love, Cactus Jack, Bradshaw, and Marc Mero.
- Steve Austin was on the Regis and Kathie Lee show on August 31, 1998.
- Former woman wrestler June Byers, 76, passed away in Houston, TX (August 1998).
- There were rumors that Vince McMahon was interested in buying the Minnesota Vikings (Summer 1998).
- Former pro wrestler Terry Garvin recently passed away of stomach cancer (late August 1998).
- The Ultimate Warrior made his WCW debut on the August 17 edition of Nitro.
- Hunter Hearst Helmsley appeared as a lifeguard on Pacific Blue, which aired August 9, 1998.
- Recon of the Truth Commission defeated Colorado Kid on July 25 in Lebanon TN to win the MCW North American title. The rematch was on Saturday, August 1, at the Fairgrounds in Nashville TN.
- There was an arm wrestling match on July 1 in Boston between Steve Austin and Vince McMahon. Tickets went on sale for FootBrawl '98 at Foxboro Stadium on August 8. Steve Austin won the arm wrestling, and the event was covered on the Boston area news stations.
- The NWA announced new members: Northeast Wrestling -
which will operate as NWA Northeast; Ohio
Valley Championship Wrestling; Midwest Wrestling,
NWA Midwest Wrestling (July); and Century Wrestling
Alliance, which will operate as NWA New England. (Summer 1998)
- Marcia Clark proved on her new Fox show that Captain Lou Albano had competed in matches that were "fixed". "Lie Detecter" featured an interview segement between Clark and Albano before Albano took the test. He denied competing in "fixed" matches, and the machine said he was lying. (Summer 1998)
- Bob Costas recently made some derogatory comments about professional wrestling and Karl Malone's involvement. Don't forget that Costa was involved in the Rock N Wrestling Connection in the 1980s. (summer 1998)
- The death of the Junkyard Dog is mentioned in the June 29, 1998 People magazine.
- Dennis Rodman was fined for missing a media appearance on June 8 and appeared at Nitro. This story made the national media. He wrestled at the WCW Bash at the Beach Pay Per View.
- The Junk Yard Dog died Tuesday morning June 2, 1998 in a car accident in Mississippi, Sylvester Ritter was 45 years old. JYD was my favorite wrestler for many years.
- Ahmed Johnson missed an NWA Championship Wrestling
America show the weekend of May 9-10. According to NWA promoter,
Dennis Coralluzzo, demanded more money and a limosine brought to his motel before he would come to the show. The motel's phone number was given out to fans who were encouraged to call all night long.
- Jim Cornette was married in Las Vegas on May 3, 1998 to a lady named Pam.
- WCW attorneys filed suit against Ric Flair
in Fulton County Superior Court on Friday, April 17.
The suit alleges "Breach of Contract" partially due to the incident listed below.
- If you need more proof that pro wrestling is at an all-time high in popularity: Pro Wrestling had the top 5 spots in the weekly Cable Nielsen ratings for the week ending April 12, 1998.
- The Learning Channel presented an episode of "More Secrets Revealed" featuring Pro Wrestling. Among the secrets: hold on to your opponents wrists while being thrown by the hair, kept your arms over the ropes when being choked against them, and there are springs and mats underneath the mat to assist in falls. What to do when a big guy is about to splash you, Killer Kowalski says, "Pray".
- 15,000 thousand fans showed up for The Wrestlemania public workout was held on Thursday, March 26, 1998, as DX, Austin, Savio Vega and others made appearances.
- A Wrestlemania press conference on February 5 announced Shawn Michaels will wrestle Stone Cold Steve Austin at Wrestlemania with Mike Tyson as the special guest referee.
- Legendary pro-wrestler Bobo Brazil died on 1/20/98 from complications related to a stroke
he suffered days prior.
- The Headbangers appeared on Regis and Kathie Lee on 1/5/98.
- Jeff Jarrett is the new NWA North American Champion. He defeated Barry Windham on RAW (aired 1/5/98).
- WWF Events in Memphis, Tennessee (12/14/97) and Little Rock, Arkansas (12/15/97)were stopped due to rowdy fans, throwing beer bottles, chairs, etc. at the ring. Obviously, this inappropriate behavior ruins the fun for real wrestling fans.
- Bret Hart and Vince McMahon had a confrontation
backstage after Survivor Series 1997 that ended
with Hart punching McMahon at least twice. It was being speculated that Bret's reason for leaving is the direction the WWF has been taking 1) racism 2) Canada vs. USA and 3) the lack of pure good guys and bad guys.
Davey Boy Smith hyperextended his knee during Hart/McMahon confrontation after Survivor
Series. Survivor Series received a 250,000 buy.
- Canadian fans were upset when footage
was shown on RAW of Shawn Michaels
blowing his nose on the Canadian Flag on
the eve of "Rememberance Day".
WWF spokesman Jay Andronaco
said "On behalf of the WWF, we apologize -- we
obviously don't have control over what Mr. Michaels
does but given the time of the year, it was
inappropriate."
- Stanley Blackburn, formerly of the AWA, passed away
at the age of 80 (1997).
- Owen Hart suffered a severe concussion at a RAW taping against Ahmed Johnson that aired October 27, 1997.
- It has been announced Gorilla Monsoon suffered a heart attack on 10/26/97.
Gorilla Monsoon has been associated with
the WWF since the early 1960's when
he was one of the top wrestlers. He
was involved in a memorable series of
matches with Bruno Sammartino, and
held the WWWF Tag Titles on two
occassions, with Bill Watts and Killer
Kowalski. He has since become a part of
the WWF announcing team, and more
recently has been the President of
the WWF.
- PILLMAN FUNERAL SERVICES:
A private service was held for Brian Pillman
October 9, 1997. Public services were held this
October 10 at 10am. Vince McMahon attended the Thursday night
service, and Eric Bischoff attended the Friday
service. Brian Pillman, age 36, was found dead October 5, 1997 at the Budgetel Inn located
at 7815 Nicollette Avenue South, in Bloomington MN. Police were called
to the scene and found the body at 1:09pm local time. Pillman was last seen alive on Saturday night around 10:45pm.
Vince McMahon made the announcement at Badd Blood.
- The Shawn Michaels interview on 9/15 caused quite a commotion in the arena. The interview was highly edited for television. Shawn apparently used so much profanity that it caused fans to make complaints (therefore, we know it must have been a lot). Also, the cameras stayed above his waist during the interview (as anyone who saw the interview would know why). Some believe Shawn was trying to get himself fired. However, he did capture the European Championship from the British Bulldog in England on 9/22/97.
- Brian Christopher recently got married (1997).
- Jack Adkisson, 68, known to wrestling fans
as Fritz Von Erich, died September 10, 1997 at the age of 68
at his Denton County home near Dallas, Texas
after a two month battle with cancer. The cause of
death was a brain tumor. Five of the Von Erich sons have suffered tragic deaths.
David Von Erich died in Japan under suspicious circumstances that many
insiders believe was drug related.
Chris, Mike, and Kerry Von Erich all committed suicide.
Another son died young in a tragic electrocution accident.
The sole surviving son is Kevin.
Adkisson briefly held the AWA World Heavyweight
Championship, beating Verne Gagne on July 27, 1963.
- 1997: Shawn Michaels did not get married as the rumour goes. It began on the Wrestle Vessel where he was spotted with what some thought was a wedding ring on a chain around his neck and a woman with him. The woman is Shawn's new girlfriend. Michaels was married once before and divorced around the time he lost the WWF IC Title. Apparently, his wife wanted him to give up pro wrestling.
- On February 18, 1985, Rock 'N Wrestling was born on MTV with the "War To Settle The Score". The Madison Square Garden Main Event was Rowdy Roddy Piper vs. Hulk Hogan
