Meredith Grey who is played by Ellen Pompeo is one of the main characters or what most believe is the main character. Her last name on the series "Grey" combined with the classic anatomy textbook Henry Gray's Anatomy is where the series name comes from. She is usually the voiceover that is played at the begining of every episode and narrates the show with some exceptions.
Meredith is the daughter of a famous doctor Dr.Ellis Grey who presently in the show suffers Alzheimer's disease and was close friends with the Chief of surgery Dr. Richard Webber. Meredith falls in love with Dr. Derek Shepherd- not knowing that he is one of her boss's or that he has a wife until his wife Addison comes to join the staff at Seattle Grace. Meredith shares her house with two of her best friends Izzie and George. Meredith is a talented young doctor who graduated from Dartmouth College, but frequently battles self-doubt, depression, and getting close to people. Derek Shepherd
Derek Shepherd who is played by Patrick Dempsey is a very talented brain surgeon who viewers are led to believe moved to Seattle from New York City right before the series debuted. He meets Meredith the night before her first day of work and there romance continues soon after that. Derek is married to Dr. Addison Montogomery Shepherd who he left in New York when he found her sleeping with his best friend Mark Sloan. Mark Sloan not only is Dereks former best friend but is a excellent plastic surgeon who shortly after Addison joins the Seattle Grace team as well. Derek's nickname is "McDreamy" - named this by the women interns for his goodlooks and great hair.
Christina Yang
Christina Yang who is played by Sandra Oh is what most viewer would refer to as a tough girl. She is afraid of commitment and doesnt do the whole emotional thing. She will always say that she is fine and wants to run when thankful patients attempt to give her a warm hug. She is from Beverly Hills, California and graduated from Standford University School of Medicine. She begins to date Dr. Preston Burke at the begining of season one and develops a strong friendship with Meredith Grey. She is also close with
Izzie and George but particulary close with Meredith.
In the third season Christina helps Preston cover up a hand tremor that was a result from a gun shot wound. This ultimately caused conflict between the couple but they fixed things then suddenly became engaged. It seemed to everyone watching that Christina was only marrying Preston because he wanted to marry her- not because she wanted to marry him. We will leave off there so I dont spoil any suprises for those who have not yet watched these episodes.
George O'Malley
George O'Malley who is played by T.R.Knight first came on to the show falling hard for the main character Meredith Grey. He is more emotional than most of the men on the Seattle Grace team but has had a positive outlook on everything from the begining of the show.
He doesnt fit in very well with the memebers of his family- shown in the Thanksgiving episode where his brothers and father force him to go hunting. One of his most memorable spotlight events in the series was when there was a power failure and he saved a mans life in an elevator. Conflict arrised when he told Meredith about his feelings for her and they ended up sleeping together. Soon after they patch up there friendship, he regains his confidence, and starts dating Callie one of the head doctors at the hospital.
