David Bertolami CS408-03 Assignment 6

Group 9: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Topic 1: Online Predators

The measures that have been taken to inform the youth about sexual predators is a good effort, however I believe that it's not good enough. When I was a very young child, I was never afraid of normal kid things. I wasn't afraid of the dark, or dragons, or witches, or wild dogs, or anything for that matter other than predators. The only thing that I was ever afraid of Was that there would be someone in my closet while I was sleeping, and that they would come out, and snatch me up. Of course I was young, and believed that these things happened often, but I only believed in such things due to a movie I saw while I was younger. This was before I had ever heard of either of the mentioned sites. However as I grew up, I guess I just forgot about such things, because I can't even recall the last time I thought about them. It's not an everyday thought of mine, as to whether the kids are safe, and if there are predators out and about.

As I grew up and forgot about such things, I suppose that maybe I should have kept them on mind, because they are in fact serious issues. I have a little brother, and I don't know what I'd do if something related to that ever happened to him. Although my opinion may be changed because it's a personal issue to me, I do think that there should be websites just like Family Watchdog. They inform the public of potential danger, and that is not hurting anyone. People should always feel comfortable where they live, why pay the extensive money for a "home" if it doesn't feel like a home at all?

The only laws that I think should be set in place, are what determines a sexual predator. I had known a kid in high school, who got nabbed with the typical, "I was just peeing in a bush!" He ended up getting charged a sexual offender, at the age of 17, and will be considered one for the rest of his life. There's no proper way to turn your life around from that, from now on people can see him online and will probably think he is a bad person, because of the label that was put on his head. Instead of a charge like that, I believe he should of gotten a simple public indecency fee, especially when there are places that you're allowed to be naked in public, such as nudist beaches, and there are absolutely no regulations on them at all. My little brother, Mother, Father, Great Grandmother and the priest could all show up to the nudist beach and no one would say anything about it. However, if someone notices you peeing in a bush behind a building, there's a chance that life may not be as good as it was.
