D2: The Mighty Ducks

Internet Movie Database: D2 D2, 1994

The second movie in the extraordinary series came in 1994. Initially titled "D2: The Mighty Ducks Are Back," the movie is now simply remembered as "D2." The movie opens on Gordon Bombay playing minor league hockey and having great success until he is injured by a a dirty player who takes a cheap shot at him. His promising career is cut short and he goes back home to Minnesota. He is greeted by Yan, a skate-sharpening friend who gives him temporary work in his shop. One day while Gordon is working, a man named Don Tibbles comes in and tells Gordon that he is being offered big money to coach Team USA in the Junior Goodwill Games. The team would consist of the Ducks and some other players from around the country.

Among the players added to the team are Julie "The Cat" Gaffney, a very talented goaltender, Luis Mendoza, a forward with blinding speed who unfortunately never learned how to stop and therefore crashes into everything, and Kenny Wu, a former Olympic figure skater. At first the original Ducks don't get along with the new players, and as a result, they skirmish. Bombay, showing why he is known as the "Minnesota Miracle Man," teaches them to work together. The team becomes unstoppable, as they steamroll past Trinidad and Italy in the double-elimination tournament. During the tournament there are concerns as to whether or not Team USA could beat the heavily-favored Team Iceland, coached by Wolff "The Dentist" Stansson, a former professional player who was kicked out of the league for playing too dirty. When the teams play, Iceland destroys USA, 12-1, and Adam Banks is seriosuly injured after being slashed in the arm after scoring USA's only goal. After the game, Bombay skates his team for hours, making them disguted with their coach.

With his players turning on him for being too distracted by endorsements and money, Bombay realizes that he forgot what the game is all about. He returns to his team in a dramatic scene in which he repeatedly blows on what can only be described as a duck whistle that was given to him by Jan. The players forgive him, and a new respect is born. Knowing that Banks, their best player, will miss significant time due to injury, Charlie recruits Russ Tyler, a street hockey player who used to heckle the team but has a "knuckle-puck" shot that drives goalies crazy. Bombay thanks Charlie, as he knows that he will need help in the upcoming Championship game against Iceland.

As an apology to his players for being too hard on them earlier, Bombay breaks out a beach ball for his team to play with during practice. It is revealed that Stansson and Team Iceland are on the other side of the ice, and they pop the ball. Bombay challenges Stansson to a game of 1-on-1 for the privelage of practicing on the ice, and Stansson agrees. Just as Bombay is about to win, Stansson slashes Bombay, sending him to the ground in pain. "Get your coach off the ice," he says to Team USA, giving them even more incentive to beat Team Iceland.

As the championship is about to begin, Adam Banks comes in and says that he is completely healthy and is ready to play. Bombay says that Russ already took his spot. Knowing that Adam is the team's bst player, Charlie offers to sit and let Adam take his spot. Bombay is porud of Charlie and tells him that he wants him to be on the bench, coaching with him. Team USA struggles to keep up with team Iceland, as they fall behind and are trailing heading into the third period. In an inspirational speech, Coach Bombay tells the team that they can do it because "ducks fly together." Jan then comes into the locker room with Ducks jerseys for all of them and they put them on and finish the game in them. Trailing by a goal with just a few seconds left, they set up a play in which the goalie skates out and is passed the puck. Once the puck is passed, however, it is revealed that it is not Goldberg, but Russ. Team Iceland doesn't expect this, and Russ takes his shot to tie the game with no time left. The game goes into a shootout and it comes down to Julie Gaffney goaltending against Iceland's best player. She makes the save and Team USA wins. The movie ends with the team celebrating and toasting marshmallows by a fire.
