I think that the free software approach should be adopted in society today. It would benefit society because software could be easily distributed, while programmers could receive a small portion of monetary gain through advertisements and download quantities. Programmers would also be able to freely modify and adapt software thus increasing their creativity. As a result of this more programs will be created, and the knowledge of software engineers will improve. I think the quantity of software produced would be increased, but the quality will not improve. The quantity will increase as a result of more engineers creating and modifying new versions of software. On the other hand, quality will decrease because software producers will be making less money as a result of their hard work and innovation. Current funding methods for free software would have to drastically improve; the government could get involved in order to improve the efficiency of this process. This would also be in their best interest so that we could stay a hegemon in technology research and development. Other modifications to the software licensing system that should be considered are what rewards are given after a certain amount of copies sold or modified, also some sort of premium should be required on each download to benefit the creator. Free software should not apply to music unless otherwise stated by the artist. When a singer produces a song it is the direct result of their business, in other words a product. Stealing this product or not selling this product for anything would be detrimental to the personal funds of a talented artist. Software should not be copyrightable because ideas stem from each other. A person’s creation can go from a simple calculator to the modern day computer, if expanded upon. Copyrights infringe this creativity and prevent the development of future innovations. Software should be allowed to copy so individuals outside of the creator can interpret in their own creative manner
