Assignment 4: Hate and the Internet

  1. I would define hate speech as an instance where one person discriminates against another because of their race, religion, sexual orientation, or ethnicity.
  2. No, because in the First Amendment people have the right to free speech, so I would not advocate placing limits because that would simply cause more problems with people and their rights. Whether we like it or not, hate speech will happen and there is no way to completely stop it when people have freedom.
  3. No, because that just places every different type of person in certain groups contradicting the idea that everyone is equal.
  4. I believe censorship is wrong, the First Amendment supports freedom of speech.
  5. No, the only person that can control everything is yourself so other people shouldn't be responsible for others actions. Hate groups should not be responsible for the actions of others. That is like saying violent video games cause people to murder.
  6. I would only propose that there be a parental control for those types of websites. Parents are the ones who need to be watching what their children do on the internet.
  7. I do not think there should be any distinction between what is legal online or offline because making new laws only provides people with more ideas on how to sneak by those laws and get away with certain things on the web.
  8. Maybe, but only in cases where people are in danger of getting hurt because of hate speech.
