"I want what's mine" and that is an X-Files episode this season
that is so good that I can't wait to watch it again. It is not that
"Trevor" was a bad episode in comparison to "Aqua Mala", but it is the
kind of episode we used to only see once or twice a season, but has become
all too commonplace this year. This is the type of episode where Scully
and Mulder basically react to events instead of being a part of the
action. Did it really matter that it was Scully and Mulder investigating
the case? It could have easily been Falsone and Ballard from Homicide
(only in my dreams would Rawls kill them off) because nothing they did
was any different than any good police officer would do.
"Trevor" wasn't helped by the fact that it seemed Scully and
Mulder were hardly in the episode. Sure they were there, but always after
the fact and other than the first scene of them together and Scully comes
up with the spontaneous combustion theory there wasn't any good repartee
between them. Even though that scene was good it was a scene that should
have happened years ago and didn't quite ring true because we know, and so
should Mulder, that it shouldn't be a big leap for Scully to make such a
theory. Yes, it was funny but it was a little too late. Also, it never
helps when the supportive characters aren't that interesting and we don't
care about them. Introducing Trevor in the last 15 minutes of the episode
made me not really care whether Rawls took him or not since we never got
to know Trevor or the relationship he had with his real mother and aunt or
why Rawls suddenly felt this fatherly desire toward him. There were a few
times I wanted them to speed up the story since it took them forever to
get to the title character. I was wondering for a while if they weren't
showing another episode in "Trevor"'s place since we didn't find out who
Trevor was until the end.
Now some miscellaneous comments on "Trevor":
- I've only been to Mississippi once in my life and I don't remember such
prominent mountains as we saw in the background especially during the
prison scene.
- Throughout the episode I couldn't stop thinking John Diehl was Mark
Harmon with his mustache and hang-dog look. Also, I don't think Diehl is
34 years old as they kept saying his character Rawls was because he looked
a few years older and he would have had to be 21 years old when he started
working on Miami Vice and he didn't look too young on that show either.
- For those people who live in tornado country explain to me how everyone
else in the prison was any safer than Rawls was in the box since it
doesn't appear there was any underground shelter for them. It looked more
as if they were getting ready for a hurricane than a twister.
- Exactly why did the prison Captain lock his door during a tornado
warning and why did the prison guard have keys to the room?
- Very funny having the prison Captain saying he is not responsible for
acts of God then have Rawls get his power via the storm and saying it was
God that made him aware of his child and allowed him to escape to see the
child.
- Oh yes, we couldn't go through an X-Files episode without Mulder making
some kind of bathroom humor when he showed Scully that Rawls had condoms
in his prison stuff and made some smart commemt.
- Boy, Value-Mart sure gets what it pays for in security when the security
company only sends one guard to check out the burglar alarm then he
decides the best way to see if anyone is in the store is to shine a
flashlight through the front window. Maybe next time the rent-a-cop will
know better than to leave his car keys in the car when he goes to
investigate a crime so the crook can't take off in it. Should I push my
brain too hard and try to understand why Rawls was able to go through the
wall of Value-Mart and not lose his clothes while every other time he
loses his clothes or why he is even able to wear clothes, etc..
- Memo to Duchovny: No more wearing shades on the show. Sonny Crockett
you are not.
- Best gross out scene was having Mulder lift the head of Bo and finding
out he doesn't have a face anymore.
- I guess Jackie Gurwitch has never seen "Scream" when instead of getting
out of the house she runs to her bedroom where she is trapped.
- Exactly why did Scully and Mulder break into Jackie Gurwitch's house
when as far as they were concerned when they drove up nothing was going on
inside the house. Scully and Mulder must have been watching too many old
time cop shows where you bust down the door first and ask questions later.
- It sure is hard to find a good man in Mississippi since June's boyfriend
was so supportive of her. Got to love those self-righteous men and how
else were they going to write him out of the story so he wouldn't be in
the way. Why did Bob think he would be safe from Rawls if he stayed at
his own place? What makes him think Rawls wouldn't come looking for him
to get to her? He should have been killed off for just being a jerk.
- It was nice to see June keeps her old unpaid hospital bills in that old
shoebox because you never know when you will need them.
- Did they really need to do the old phone ringing with someone calling to
warn the person they are in immediate danger only to go answer the door
first with the person at the door being the one they were being warned
about bit?
- Why would anyone put a lock on the food closet such as Jackie did?
- Scully and Mulder must have studied the lay of the land around Jackie's
house since they parked their car a block or so away and got to her house
by walking through neighbor's backyards. Also, why does Mulder have a
shotgun and not Scully? You would think both would want to be armed going
against Rawls.
- The funniest thing in the episode was when Scully tries to unlock the
car as Rawls is coming after her and Trevor. I laughed because I couldn't
believe they did that because it is so cliche which only made it worse
when they had Scully dropping her keys. Come on, are we really supposed
to believe Scully and Mulder would lock their car since they never have in
the past.
- How backwoods is that area they there would be a phone booth in the
middle of nowhere?
- I have to admit it was pretty cool how Rawls died by getting hit by a
car and not being able to go through the glass so he is cut in half.
This is another par for the course X-Files episode for season six
where Scully and Mulder were there, but they weren't really there. They
run around a lot, but not really doing anything to stop the bad guy. Maybe
Rawls did see his kid as a way to start over, but it was hard to believe
that by the way he was acted. The theme of this episode appears to be
people looking for second chances where June got her second chance when
she found Rawls money and Rawls when he found out he had a kid.
Unfortunately, we didn't get to see Scully and Mulder thinking about
second chances so we basically don't care if Rawls and June get their
second chances.
