Go to http://www.unh.edu/tech-services/winindex.html after reading these directions (the resulting page will open in a new window).
The page that results will automatically redirect to another page for Computing and Information Services at UNH. Look at the 6th bulleted point in the list presented on the page - it says PuTTY (ssh client). You can click on the link for Instructions and read the instructions (but it might be a bit confusing). Then click on the link that says Download (PuTTY Download Page).
From all the confusing links on the resulting page, you want to select the FIRST one that says "putty-0.60-installer.exe" and will be under the heading A Windows installer for everything except PuTTYtel. After clicking on the putty-0.60-installer.exe link, you will see pop-up windows that will walk you thru the set-up process and install the application for you. Just use whatever they suggest for installation (and select the Run option). When prompted, indicate that you want to put an icon on your desktop as well (which will make it easier for you to find it).
Once it is installed, click on the icon to launch PuTTY (aka SSH or secure shell) and when prompted, type in cisunix.unh.edu where it provides a place to specify Host Name (leave other things alone as they are the default settings) and click the Open button. A black small screen will open but the first time you log in you will also see a PuTTY Security Alert box as well that says something like:
The server's host key is not cached in the registry. YouClick on the the Yes button in that alert box and you will not see the message again.
have no guarantee that the server is the computer you
think it is.
The server's tsa2 key fingerprint is:
blah blah blah
Now the black screen will say
login as:
You need to type in your username and hit the Enter key on your keyboard.
Then it will respond with
username@cisunix.unh.edu's password:
(where username is the username that you entered...)
Type in your password and hit the Enter key again. You will notice that as
you type
in your password, nothing is echoed on the screen for security reasons (in
fact,
the cursor doesn't even move) - that is okay.
Once you have successfully entered your username and password, you will see the CIS Unix Menu. The menu is keyboard-driven which means that the mouse doesn't work! Use the numbers on your keyboard to select your option; we will be using the shell (option 4) and Pine (option 1) but if you want to just log out, type in 5 and then hit the Enter key.
