Grading

Grading Policies

The course grade will be based on:

Attendance
Your attendance in class is worth 5% of your final grade. I keep track of your attendance by having you sign an attendance roster at the beginning of each class. It is your responsibility to seek out the attendance roster to sign it if you arrive late or if you missed when it was circulating around the room (you can come up to me after class to sign in if you missed it).

I used to grade attendance based on class participation but I realized that some students are uncomfortable speaking up in class. Rather than penalize those folks, I give you credit for being there if you are physically present in class. Hopefully you will be there mentally as well (and participate if you are comfortable doing so). So I like to say Be here now and now you know why...

Quiz
There is one quiz worth 5% of your grade and the quiz will cover basic UNIX.
Exams
There are two exams scheduled during the semester. The first exam is worth 20% of your final grade. The second exam replaces an out-of-class final exam (that is, we will not be having a final during finals' week) and so it will be cumulative and worth 30% of your final grade. See our class calendar for the dates of the exams.
Although rare, it may be necessary to revise the schedule of exams, homework, and/or quizzes. When and if this happens I will make announcements in class.

Although you do not necessarily have to attend class with your assigned section for lectures, you will need to attend with your assigned section on exam days.

Missing exams is strongly discouraged but if you are seriously ill I ask that you contact me via email and let me know ahead of time.

Homework
  • Homework grades will be posted on-line using a private code that you select to identify yourself. You will let us know what your code is in the first homework assignment.
  • Our goal is to have your homework graded within a week of when it was due. If you believe we made an error in grading your homework assignment (or you do not understand why it was graded the way that it was), please let us know before the next homework assignment is due.
  • The homework is designed to provide you with an opportunity to practice the skills learned in class and to experiment on-line. This means that you need to do your own work - academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. See more about academic dishonesty below.
  • No late homework will be graded. Please do not ask to turn in late homework. I will drop one homework score from your average when calculating your final grade. My recommendation is not to burn this early. Remember turning in homework electronically means getting things done early. It often happens that there are computer errors, network errors, and so on just when you wanted to turn in your assignment.
If there are extenuating circumstances preventing you from participating in class, feel free to come and discuss them with me personally.
  • Helpful hints regarding submitting homework:
    • Always Cc (carbon copy) yourself on homework assignments! This way if something is lost or we did not receive it on time, you have proof that it was turned in (Cc'ing yourself is a good practice in general when you are sending important emails).
    • Once the homework grades are posted, check them to make sure you were given credit (if you turned the assignment in). Suspected errors in homework assignment grades must be reported within 10 days of the on-line posting of grades.
Final Project
The final project in our course is worth 15% of your final grade. You will be asked to present the Web site that you create to the rest of the class during the last week of classes.
Academic Dishonesty
Academic dishonesty includes but is not limited to:
  • Cheating on exams/quizes
  • Discussing exams/quizzes with someone who has not yet taken them
  • Copying someone else's homework, xhtml source code, or project and submitting it as your own (with or without their knowledge) or having someone else do the work for you
  • Allowing someone else to copy your homework or project or doing the work for someone else
  • Collaboration on homework - you must do your own work!

The consequence is typically an F for the course which, by CS Department policy, will result in disciplinary letters to be sent to your department.

You should also be familiar with and follow the University's Acceptable Use Policy regarding the use of campus computing facilities. If your account is removed or suspended because of inappropriate activity it will be very difficult (impossible) to do the course work for CS403! And don't forget that you are responsible for any/all activity originating from your account!!
