Rhinitis (Common Cold)

In one year, people in the United States suffer from about 1 million colds!

The common cold is caused by one of over 200 different kinds of viruses.

Everyone is familiar with the symptoms:


Prevention: Hygiene! Wash your hands frequently, and cover your cough and sneeze.


Pharyngitis

Strep throat caused by S. pyogenes

Pharyngitis is an inflammation of the thorat, which causes pain and swellling. The severity of the pain can range from moderate to severe, depending on the causative agent.

Viral infections are usually mild.

The most serious cause of pharingitis is caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pyogenes.

Prevention: Good handwashing, especially after coughing and sneezing, and before preparing foods or eating.

Influenza

This disease is caused by influenza A, B, and C viruses. The symptoms begin very quickly, and these include:


Prevention: Annual vaccination and hygiene.
