Connor Coutu CS408-01 Assignment 7

Group ?: Free Software

Considering the “Free Software” approach advocated by Richard Stallman and others I think that his approach is necessary as far as promoting progress in arts and sciences and not depriving the programmer, or anyone else, of use of the program. Yet, I feel that some people take that to far and do come close to copying something that is an original to try and take credit. So I do believe in both free and proprietary software. I also feel that if the Free Software Approach takes place then the amount of free software that would be produced would be ten times the amount that is produced now as well as the quality of the software coming out being lower because there would be no limitations. I don’t think that the funding methods for free software would be efficient either because there would be way to much material and not enough money coming in for it. I believe the best thing for software is a patent because it allows you to keep something that is original and yours to a certain extent. Which means you could copy the software but not the original. Some say that software is not easy for ordinary consumers to use, anyone can modify free software and there are many versions, which can cause confusion in getting the software you want.

In my pinion I don’t mind whether or not the software is copyrightable or not, but if I had to choose I would say that it is easier to be able to copyright it. If it was all free it would cause to much confusion and there would be an overload of software’s to choose from. I don’t think there should be a problem with being able to copyright something that you’ve created and I also believe you should be able to make a “remix” of something. I am a believer that it is important for both Free and Proprietary software
