Assignment 4: Hate and the Internet

  1. Hate Speech is any display of despite towards certain people or/ persons, who share similarities, through religion, nationality, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, race and/or disabilities. This means showing any vulgar display towards anyone that is offensive.
  2. I feel that there should be limits to speech, although that may conflict with our rights. I feel that something so strong as hate related material should not be allowed, because it cannot be used in any good way. It's not right to share your ideologies that can be so offensive to others. I believe that a way to limit speech is focusing on the public views, meaning that any hate related material should be banned from the public eye.
  3. A central idea of what hatred is, and when its not appropriated should be adopted all over the world. Hate speech should not only be regulated here, but everywhere because it is wrong in every aspect.
  4. There should defiantly be a censorship for websites. Websites are an especially huge part of the world, and media, and I believe it should be permeated. I should be banned and control for the better of the public.
  5. No, I don't agree. I feel that people are influenced by multiple sources, one specific source I feel could not make such a great impression so make a person react in such drastic ways. When we look at other criminals, typically they have some connection to some event or person who has influenced them negatively, and those people are not held responsible, why should on person specifically be help accountable.
  6. Personally, As a child I had aol for internet and having limitations to my web surfing I believe protected me from a lot of things that are out there. Child especially should be regulated online so that they don't find hate related material, and even pornography anything that is not appropriate for their viewing.
  7. The internet is an inescapable part of life, and I believe that the internet is how we learn. Internet is available to all children, teens, and adults so therefore internet should be monitored (not by the government) but by parents. Because media is mostly based online, having it regulated will help to regulate this problem, but offline anything available to the public should be regulated too.
  8. No, because pornography doesn't actually hurt anyone. Pornography os something that is not related to despite/hatred displays of emotions towards others. People can easily ignore pornography, but when faced with issues of hatred its harder to look away when you potentially have some emotional connection to that ideology.
