Hurricanes Katrina & Rita |

| In September of 2005, almost a month after Hurricane Katrina tore through Mississippi and Louisiana, I was finally sent down to assist in the recovery efforts. I had been on the volunteer list since the day after the hurricane struck, wanting to do what I could to help those in need. What I walked in to was something out of an unimaginable nightmare. The destruction was far beyond what I had imagined or seen on television. I was able to assist two cities bring their water systems back on-line and ensure that the water was safe for consumption. I met some wonderful people, and made a few life-long friends during that trip. Several of the people working in my camp (an EMEDS facility) were Air National Guard members from Mississippi who had left their own demolished homes to help those around them. Those are the people who I will always remember as the heroes of this mission. |
