This is a map of Africa.
For the purposes of this website, we will be focusing on the Eastern
Coastal region of the continent.
These are a couple of pictures of the culture in the Eastern and coastal regions of Africa. Some of the nations in this region include Tanzania, Zanzibar, Madagascar, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique. In these areas there is a large community of Muslims. Nearly all of this region was once colonized in the imperial era up until about the 1960's, and consequently is still adjusting to life without colonial rule.
Music is another example of the culture in Eastern Africa. This album, Warm Heart of Africa by The Very Best is an example of the music scene in this region, as well as its cross cultural connections. This album includes music by artists who are well known in the United States, such as M.I.A. who sings the popular song "Paper Planes," which is featured in the movie "Slum Dog Millionaire"
This is a picture of the Sultan of Zanzibar. Zanzibar, and much of these East African nations have rich cultural link to India. The post of the Sultan in Zanzibar helped to create a ruling Arab elite in the East of Africa. Over the history of Sultans ruling in thi area, some were involved in the East African Slave trading.
