Assignment 6:Hate and the Internet

  1. I think hate speech is the words that vilifies a person or a group of people founded on discrimination against those people.-- From Wekipedia
  2. I agree with the limits on free expression in order to deal with the problems posed by hate speech. I think that the limitation on free expression can reduce the attack to each other by communication. However, it is very difficult to make a certain dintinction between hate speech and free speech. Maybe the government should promulgate a law to limit it formally.
  3. I think that we should reach a common international consensus about hate speech, like the slander to women. Nevertheless, people in different countries have different religions, it is hard to achieve a consistent standards.
  4. I think the censorship and the filtering of hate group websites is appropriate. It is very necessary that website should build up the censorship to check hate speech because hate speech usually hurt some people, and the censorship can help to decrease the hurt. Also, on the government website, the censorship is a very significant way to protect the power of government.
  5. I will say yes. Those criminals commit crimes of hatred without any specific reason because of the seditious and rancorous words on the hate-oriented Web sites. The hate speech of the creators provides a chance to the criminals to let their hatred off. Therefore, creators of hate-oriented Web sites should be held responsible for actions of people who view those sites and then commit hate crimes.
  6. Yes, I would advocate special restrictions on making hate-related material available to children via the Internet. Children are always curious. If the creator just warning people that there are some hate-related material, children will probably link it, and read it. It is very harm to children. Therefore, people can set up a age limit, which if the person's age is under 18 years old, the personal ID will prove that the children will be refused by linking into the websites which has the hate-related material.
  7. Yes, because I think that if the hate speech is available online, it will display to the public. But if it is offline, I think it can give a more wide limitation, because the influence is more obviously online than offline.
  8. Yes, these two standards should be distincted. The first one will be harmful for all people, while the second one should be forbidden from children. They concerned on different people. In some countries, like Japan, there are almost no specific limitation on pornography.
