The different kinds of animals
There are many different types of animals in the world. Many animals are quite similar to each other. Others are quite different. Animals can be classified based on their similarities. Continue reading on below to read more about their characteristics.
Animals have several characteristics that set them apart from other living things. Animals are eukaryotic and mostly multicellular,[4] which separates them from bacteria and most protists. They are heterotrophic,[5] generally digesting food in an internal chamber, which separates them from plants and algae.[6] They are also distinguished from plants, algae, and fungi by lacking rigid cell walls.[7] All animals are motile,[8] if only at certain life stages. In most animals, embryos pass through a blastula stage, which is a characteristic exclusive to animals.
Animals are divided into O6 groups: amphibians, fish, mammals, birds, insects, and reptiles.
Amphibians are cold-blooded and they spend part of their lives under water and part of their lives on land. Amphibians breathe with gills or lungs or through their skin.
Fish are cold blooded and they lay eggs. Most fish are covered with scales. They have fins not legs and they live in water and breathe with through their gills.
Mammals are the most intelligent creatures on earth. They learn to adapt to many different climates and living conditions. Some mammals are tame, some are wild, ad some are very large or small.
Birds are the most useful to man next to mammals. There are thousands of different kinds of birds. They vary in size from the tiny hummingbird to the large ostrich. Birds breathe faster than mammals and their bodies are warmer. Only mammals and birds are warm-blooded.
Insects have six legs when fully grown. Insects lay many eggs and they go through a life cycle called metamorphosis. They have no lungs, but small openings on their bodies. They are also cold-blooded and have one or two pairs of wings.
Reptiles have dry, scaly skin. They have short legs or no legs at all. They breathe with their lungs and are cold-blooded. Reptiles are vertebrates. Most young reptiles hatch from eggs, but not all do.
