The Mets are more Long Islands team than the rest of New York State, but they are still in the state so they made the page. They entered the leauge in 1961 through an expansion draft. One of the largest reasons for the Mets creation was the absence of a National leauge team in New York with the Brooklyn Dogers and the New York Giants leaving town several years earlier. The Yankees and the Mets aren't the fiercest of rivals, as they are in different divisions and leauges. Since the start of interleauge play in 1997 the two teams have met much more often and a kind of rivalry as developed that reached its height during the subway series in 2000, the first since the advent of interleauge play.
