Course Objectives: The objective of this course is to acquire an appreciation for and an understanding of the ideas of contemporary finance theory as they relate to acquisition, allocation, and overall management of the firm's financial resources. Emphasis will be placed on development of basic analytical skills useful for financial decision-making. The topics and concepts receiving special attention are valuation, capital budgeting, capital asset pricing, capital costing and restructuring, and dividend policy.
Required Textbook: Fundamentals of Corporate Finance by Richard Brealey, Stewart Myers and Alan Marcus, 3rd ed, Irwin McGraw-Hill, 1991.
Recommended Reading:
1. Newspapers: Wall Street Journal.
2. Study Guide to the Text: Copies of the Study Guide to the Brigham-Houston text are available at the bookstore. This guide gives a summary of each chapter as well as additional problems for review by students on their own.
Methodology: The class will be a combined lecture and tutorial. A fairly substantial number of problems from the textbook are assigned for each class. You are expected to study the reading assignments prior to each class and try to work out the related quizzes, self-test questions, and/or assigned problems beforehand. (Solutions to quizzes and self-test questions are available in your textbook.) Some of your assignments require the use of resources available on the web. On the assignment sheet, I have listed four such assignments, prefixed with “e-“.
You are also expected to look over The Wall Street Journal regularly. The goal is to read about the news items (economic, political, financial, etc.) and understand their implications for corporate financial management. I will often use articles from the Journal for discussion in class.
Assessment: Two semester exams and a final will be given. Each semester exam will cover the materials discussed since the previous exam. The final will be cumulative. These exams must be taken in class on the designated dates and times. No make?up exams will be given. So, students should plan to schedule their other commitments on nonexam dates.
Your exams will be given a weight of 90% (30% each). The remaining 10% of your course grade will come from your class participation and other assignments. The latter includes a brief project due at the end of the semester.
Regular attendance/participation is required to receive credit.
