Malicious software programs ("computer viruses", "worms", etc.) pose an ongoing serious threat to our users' computers and the UNH network environment. For that reason, we have been scanning and disinfecting e-mail passing through the Unix mail gateway machines since 2003. That scanning process is described on the Virus Filtering Service for CIS Unix Mail page.
Starting in January 2004, we will additionally scan and disinfect (or, if necessary, quarantine) user files residing on CIS Unix servers. This will help protect our computing infrastructure from viruses that arrived by e-mail before e-mail scanning started, and those that may have arrived on our systems by other methods (file sharing, FTP, etc.).
Things to note:
You will be notified of any changes to your files via e-mail.
The scanning, cleaning, and notification process will be automatic, with no human intervention. It protects client confidentiality and is in compliance with USNH policy. UNH IT employees will not read any file content.
This service only applies to files that physically reside on the CIS Unix file servers. The scanning software will not (and can not) look at the files on your PC or Macintosh. UNH IT strongly recommends that you install virus protection software on your own machine; please see the Virus Protection page for more information.
