CIS Unix Accounts

You must have a CIS Unix account in order to use the CIS Unix systems; you also need a CIS Unix account to make full use of the PCs in the Student Computing Centers. Each account allows full access to e-mail, other Internet services, applications, and programming languages.

Account Eligibility

We provide and maintain CIS Unix accounts for:

  • Students registered for credit courses in the current (or near-future) semester at UNH, UNHM, DCE, or Granite State College;

  • Faculty or staff members currently employed (or who will be employed in the near future) at UNH, USNH, UNHM, or Granite State College, including visiting and adjunct faculty;

  • Faculty Emeriti;

  • In addition, there are (so-called) "Sponsored Accounts" for people who may not be included in the categories above. Examples:

    • Ex-students, ex-faculty, or ex-staff members who are performing UNH-related tasks for which a computer account is useful (examples: graduated students finishing up research with their thesis advisors; ex-faculty members collaborating with colleagues; ex-staff members engaged in active consultation with ex-co-workers);

    • Members or employees of UNH-affiliated organizations or businesses. (Examples: Marine Program Docents; Campus Ministry members; Whittemore Center employees; Fire Department firefighters; UNH Bookstore employees);

    • Course instructors desiring separate accounts for their course-related activities;

    • Participants in short-term University-sponsored academic programs (e.g. Project SMART, Upward Bound), by special arrangement with CIS, only for the duration of the program.

    For more information on Sponsored Accounts, please visit the Sponsored Users page.

Accounts are automatically generated for nearly all students once they appear in the registration lists for the current or future semesters. Accounts for fulltime employees are also automatically created once they appear in the current employee lists.

If (for some reason) you do not have a CIS Unix account, and you appear in the current lists of students, faculty, and staff we receive periodically from the Registrar and Human Resources:

  • UNH: Please visit the Dimond Academic Commons Information Technology Support Center (DAC ITSC) in the Dimond Library to apply for a CIS Unix account. Proof of your affiliation with UNH may be required, typically your UNH-supplied ID card.

  • UNHM: Contact Karla Vogel, University Center (Students and Faculty), or Sean Embree (Staff)

Account Removal

CIS Unix accounts are maintained for as long as the owner is affiliated with UNH as a faculty member, staff member, or registered student, or provides sponsorship/verification information as described above. Generally, users who leave UNH (for one reason or another) will eventually lose their accounts; the time the account is maintained differs according to the user's most recent status as shown in Table 2, “Account Expiration Times”.

Table 2. Account Expiration Times

User Status Expiration Time
Student 140 days
Non-Adjunct Faculty 90 days
Adjunct Faculty 120 days
Non-Faculty Employee 14 days

So (for example) a UNH student graduating in mid-May, and not returning in some other capacity, can expect his or her acccount to expire 140 days from then, sometime in early October.

Students will receive an e-mail account expiration notice sent to their accounts two weeks before the expiration date.

If your account is due to be deleted, you can request that your mail be forwarded to a new address for a limited time (typically two years); details will be included in the account expiration notice.

In rare cases, a user's account may be suspended or removed outside the normal channels described above, according to the following guidelines:

  • A currently-registered student's account may be removed or suspended at any time for disciplinary reasons at the request of the Vice President for Student Affairs and Academic Services. The request must be made on department letterhead and sent via campus mail to a system administrator.

  • A currently-employed staff member's account may be removed or suspended at any time at the request of the staff member's supervisor. The request must be made on department letterhead and sent via campus mail to a system administrator.

  • A currently-employed faculty member's account may be suspended or removed at any time at the request of the faculty member's dean. The request must be made on department letterhead and sent via campus mail to a system administrator.

  • Some individuals are in more than one category: for example, a person who is both a staff member and a registered student. In such cases, account suspension/deletion has to be requested and approved by all relevant parties.

  • A Sponsored Account may be suspended or removed at the request of the account's sponsor.

  • In extraordinary circumstances, accounts may be suspended immediately without waiting for the paperwork outlined above, at the discretion of a system administrator. Deletion, however, will require the written confirmation described above.

Inactive Accounts

CIS Unix accounts that are inactive (no logins or file activity) for over six months may be suspended. This prevents normal access to the account, although e-mail will continue to be delivered normally. Generally speaking, a password change, or use of the Blackboard "Link-Up" utility is adequate to desuspend the account.

We don't currently remove accounts for inactivity.
